The best thing you, as a care giver, can do to help your child become a better reader is   read to your child, read with your child, and provide opportunities for him/her to read.

Help him/her think like a reader by discussing what is being read.  Discuss the pictures, unknown words, and the characters.  Make predictions together about what is going to happen next in the book. Mostly, though, just enjoy the book together.
